My Authentic Story
Hi, I’m Paul Webster, Business Owner, Blogger, Author and Coach. That wasn’t always the case though. A few years ago I found myself with no passion for my business, no job, no savings and little superannuation.
Fear, or as I preferred to call it “a lack of confidence”, meant I tended to place a low value on myself, and my work. Undervaluing myself meant that despite years of hard work I had little to show for it.
I was terrible with my finances and was always putting other people’s needs in front of my own. My health was poor. My wife had passed away a few years earlier after a long battle with cancer and without her I struggled to find my purpose.
My wife had also been my business partner and after her death I no longer had the passion in my work. I knew I didn’t want to keep doing what I was doing, and I had no idea what else I could do. At fifty I was too old to get a job and way too young to retire even, if I could afford it. I wasted 2 years wrestling with that problem until one day I sat down and decided to start with a clean slate.
I asked myself these questions; What is my mission in life? What do I want my business to be?
I knew I would have my own business, but all I came up with was four things that my business had to have. It had to have flexibility, a decent income, involve working with great people and make a difference to others. I was determined to find a way to get them.
The answers didn’t come like a lightning bolt or tremendous Ah Ha moment even though I wished they would. No, I studied, read, and attended courses. I took a Diploma in Life Coaching, a Cert IV in Small business management and I signed up with every internet Guru I could find. I spent thousands on online courses, attended video university, webinars, and seminars.
It was a challenging process to get a place where I could say “I’ve looked inside myself and I’m happy with what I found”.
I have been a student of personal development all my life. I love to learn and talk about personal development. I’ve also been in business most of my life and love the freedom and lifestyle it offers. I had accumulated years of teachings, learnings and experiences that eventually built up, one after the other, until I reached the point where I realised I had value to give and I could teach others from my experiences. I just needed to step up and reach out to the people I could serve by sharing what I’d learnt.
At the start of my journey I was learning for my benefit but now I realized there were thousands of people who struggled with the same things I did. Now everything I’d struggled with in my life, and the mistakes I’d made, had a purpose. They qualified me to help others. Help them build the confidence and self-esteem they need, and some of the business skills they need to create their own business, pursue their dreams, create the level of income they want and love doing what they do.
Now I felt empowered because I’d found my purpose.
Now my quest is to build a movement of enterprising people who want to make a change. People who want to live their life with a clear vision and a sense of purpose. People who want to use their special and unique talents in their own business. Who would rather work at something they love and get paid for doing that, than sit in front of the TV hoping their lotto numbers come up.
There are thousands of people struggling to get work but too young to retire. The solution was simple. Employ yourself doing something you love so there’s no need to retire.
I started to see how a new life could be. One that had financial abundance because I was adding such value to the lives of others. A life that included the things I loved like travel and meeting new people. One that had plenty of variety and freed me from a routine or a building. One that meant I was working with people who were positive and looking to improve their own lives. One that meant I was making a positive difference to the world.
Hence my business Savvy Small Business was born. To support and inspire those who are ready to have a go themselves.
